The Priorat – Oil route
The Priorat region is located a few kilometers from Barcelona and is one of the least populated regions of Catalonia.
A large number of the villages of the Priorat base their economy in the production of the high quality Siurana olive oil. The terraces of olive trees bordered by margins of dry stone walls configure the characteristic landscape of the region. The productive system is based on the agricultural cooperatives which sell the oil and help to promote organised tastings and various activities around the imaginary of the oil. Many of these centuries old cooperatives are located in modernist buildings which, themselves, deserve a visit.
We recommend a visit to Falset, with its magnificent Agricultural Cooperative built by Cèsar Martinell, a disciple of Gaudí; and a visit to Cabacés, where there is an oil which has won several awards.
Other towns that deserve a visit are Marçà, with the gothic church of Sant Joan, El Masroig, El Molar, La Figuera, La Vilella Baixa and La Vilella Alta.
Don’t miss the Cooperative of Ulldemolins which produces ecological oil using a completely natural process, fighting pests using predators and working in cold oil extraction.
We propose a route by the Priorat with your electric car visiting villages that continue to live in contact with nature, olives and its most precious product: olive oil.
